Miami Beach Police Athletic League Award

(1992 & 1995)

Founded in 1958, the Miami Beach Police Athletic League (oldest PAL in Florida) has an impressive trimage001ack record as a community crime prevention program. Under the leadership of a full-time police officer as Executive Director, and with vital assistance from a volunteer board made up of citizens and local law enforcement officers, PAL offers the youth of the community an array of recreational, athletic and educational activities. Programs are designed with a two-fold purpose: to create better relations between law enforcement officers and youth, and to prevent juvenile delinquency.

image3371Founded in 1981 by the Miami Design Preservation League, MBCDC spearheaded the economic revitalization of the Art Deco District, public and private investment on Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road and re-emergence of South Beach as a world-class tourist destination. The organization now works throughout Miami Beach and the region to preserve affordable housing and strengthen residential neighborhoods, to create increased economic opportunity and celebrate an extraordinary architectural and urban endowment, and to improve the quality of life for all those who live and work and visit the City.

The City of Miami Beach Building Department was established in 1925. The City had its own Building Code until the 1950s when the City adopted the South Florida Building Code.

The modern construction boom began in the 1970s and the State of Florida started mandating statewide building codes. The first law required all municipalities and counties to adopt and enforce one of the four state-recognized model codes known as the “state minimum building codes.”

Lincoln Theatre Appreciation

(1997-1998)

Homepage_r1_c1The Lincoln Theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.In 1993, the theatre was restored by the U Street Theatre Foundation, with $9 million of aid from the District of Columbia government. The restoration started in 1989 by developer Jeffrey N. Cohen, who was working on a controversial $250 million redevelopment plan, “Jackson Plaza”, for the Shaw/U-Street area.

 

 

Association for Retarded Citizens
